Wild turkey hunting: tips and tricks
Posted on September 13, 2022
This fall, get on your ATV and go wild turkey hunting. In the Outaouais region, from October 22 to 28, you can practice this sport with a rifle, muzzle-loader or breech-loader, crossbow or bow. Please note that to practice wild turkey hunting, you must have a permit, which you can only obtain if you have a training certificate. Now that you have your license, let us give you some tips for a successful hunt.
Search
Before you go hunting, preferably the night before, it's important to locate the trees in which the turkeys roost for the night. These trees are often located near the edge of agricultural fields, and this is where your male turkeys will do their courtship to attract females. The night before, it is important to make sure your turkeys have not been disturbed, which could cause them to move to another location. In the morning, if your turkeys have indeed moved, remember that a turkey can walk a very long distance and that they may have moved closer to you. Stay safe!
Camouflage
It is very important to be well camouflaged because turkeys have exceptional eyesight. A simple detail on your coat that is not camouflaged could alert turkeys of your presence. To make your job easier, we recommend that you purchase camouflage clothing that matches the colors of the season, so orange-brown and gray will be appropriate for the fall.
Imitation
Before you start turkey hunting, you'll need to master the call. If you trumpet nonsense, all your chances of attracting turkeys will be in vain. But if you've taken the time to master the call, you'll have a great time charming them, and when your efforts pay off, you'll find great satisfaction in your hard work.
Patience
Turkeys are very stubborn animals that will take great pleasure in keeping you waiting. They have a very keen survival instinct and will not be taken in so easily. Be patient, wait without moving too much and be ready to react quickly when the time comes. Don't chase the gobblers, as your movements will only encourage them to be quiet. All you have to do is sit back and wait.
Wild turkey hunting is a sport that, for some, takes years to perfect. It may take two or three years before you get your first kill, just be patient and never get discouraged.
